Can I get a phone number in another city or province?
Yes. You can add local numbers in most Canadian area codes and route them anywhere. A business in Calgary can answer a Toronto 416 or 647 number and a Montreal 514 number from the same desk, with the same menu or a different greeting per city. The numbers are ordered with your plan and can be added later as you expand.
How a number in another city works
A local number is tied to a rate centre, which is the geographic area the number belongs to, not to a physical phone line. On a cloud system, the number simply points to whatever routing you choose. Callers in that city dial a local number; your team answers wherever it sits.
- Give each market its own greeting, or send every number to the same menu.
- Show the local number as caller ID when calling customers in that city.
- See in reports which city's number each call arrived on.
- Add a number for a new market before you open a physical office there.
Area codes and overlays
Many Canadian cities have more than one area code covering the same area. Toronto uses 416, 647 and 437; Vancouver 604, 778 and 236; Montreal 514 and 438; Calgary 403 and 587 and 825. They are equivalent for callers, though the older codes are seen as more established and are scarcer. Availability of a particular code is checked when you order.
Things to consider
- 9-1-1: each number has a registered service address, and calls from a location must reach the right emergency centre. A specialist confirms the address for each site with you at setup.
- Caller ID name is registered per number, so plan what each one should display.
- If you later open an office in that city, the number moves to the new site's phones without changing.
- Numbers in small or rural rate centres may have limited availability.

Is 416 better than 647 for a Toronto business?
Callers treat them the same. 416 is older and often perceived as more established, but new 416 numbers are scarce. If a 416 is not available, 647 or 437 is used by the same neighbourhoods, and a toll-free or vanity number may serve marketing better.
Can I get a number in the United States?
This depends on availability and use; discuss it with a specialist. A US local number may be useful if you serve American customers who prefer not to dial internationally. Toll-free numbers are another option that work from both countries.
Do I need an office in the city to have a number there?
No. The number is a routing destination, not an address. Businesses commonly hold numbers in cities they serve remotely. The registered 9-1-1 address for the number should reflect where the phones actually are.
